This weekend we headed over to Mt Maunganui, abut 3 hours east of Auckland, where our friends had rented a townhouse for the weekend. Our first stop was lunch at Mills Reef Winery - fantastic food washed down by superb wine.

We then headed to Mt Maunganui itself, and after settling in we went for a walk down to the beach and onto this small peninisula for views up and down the beach.

In the summer months, Mt Maunganui is a very popular holiday destination for kiwis, but now a lot quieter with plenty of space on the beach.

The mount itself is a popular walk, but we left the climb this time and plan to do that on our next visit.

Our journey back to Auckland was via Morton Estate winery to pick up some bargains in their wine sale.
