Port Douglas, Far North Queensland

As it is my 40th this year it was my turn to choose our winter holiday destination. So we headed off for some warmth and sunshine in Port Douglas and Cairns in Far North Queensland. Port Douglas is an hour north of Cairns along a picturesque coastline road, and a small relaxed town. The hotel pool which we made use of to cool off.

On one side of town is the stunning Four Mile Beach, the view from the lookout down the beach early one morning so still quiet. It got busier during the day when the surf lifesavers were there. Safe to swim in the winter months, but in summer the sea is full of deadly jellyfish - we still decided to keep out of that water.

Whilst on the other side of town is the marina, a popular spot and where all the day trips leave for the Great Barrier Reef.

For such a small town we found some excellent restaurants and bars - the Court House Hotel being our pub of choice for a late afternoon beer - and only one of two buildings still standing after a cylone in 1911.

The old wharf is a popular spot for fishing, though you have to be careful not to reel in a crocodile that live in the estuary!
